Poetry Reflection 2/25/15

Poetry Reflection
3/25/15
Prompts: 1) Poetry can be a vital, real part of everyone's life. What place or importance does poetry have in my own life? 2) Does poetry belong to everyone? How do I know? 3) How does the life and experiences of a poet affect the poem he/she creates?

Poetry in my life is important because it gives me something that I can relate to. Unlike books, poems can connect to peoples lives and maybe remember that they hope to never forget. "The Road not Taken" is a great example of this. It's about decisions which we all make and we can't redo those decisions. Poetry is also important in my life because it sends messages. Some book and other types of writing can do that, but poetry does it in a short and quick manner. Also, poetry makes sending a message interesting by adding a rhyme scheme.

I think that poetry does belong to everyone. I think this because everyone can like one poem, poem genre, or poet. Poems are like books, people might hate all of them, but one poem or genre. Another reason why I think poetry belongs to everyone is they can at least relate to one poem. This helps make poems relatable for everyone.

The poets life might affect the mood, setting, diction, or topic of the poem. For instance, Edgar Allan Poe's poems were dark and had a scary mood. This is because his childhood was filled with death and sicknesses. Another poet you can see this in is Pat Mora. She wrote "Gold" which is about a desert, the same area she grew up around. These examples show that a poets life can greatly affect their poems.

Found Poem 3/23/15

"Through the window, hall clock chimed twelve. There was no answer. Gnawing anxiety seemed to touch, to try to reach midnight. Things had been uneasy, the silence carried out."

This poem is about the feeling you get when you are home alone pass midnight. "There was no answer" is calling your parents to see when they get home. The "Gnawing anxiety" is the the feeling of fright you feel while you are alone.

Spine Poem 3/23/15

"Great expectations speak the help with their eyes a step from Heaven."
I wanted to make a poem that is positive and would help people be guided in the right direction. Specifically about how "great expectations" can make you a better person. That's is why I say they bring you "a step from heaven."

Two Voice Poem

Heat

Michael                                                                                                                              Ellie

I hope to meet him
 in person one day.
I see him everyday
of my life.
I pitch exactly
 like him.
I see people copy and
look up to him.
We love El Grande.
I listen to their every
 game on the radio.
I go to all of
their games.
We love the Yankees.
I think she's beautiful.
I didn't tell him
about my family
We kept secrets from each other.
I live in a poor family.
It's hard for me to
make actual friends.
We struggle.

I'm on an all-star team.
My father plays this
for a living.
We love baseball.

3rd Quarter Reflection

3rd Quater reflection
3/13/15
Prompts: In what area do you think you made your biggest improvements in English Language Arts? What has been the most challenging part of 3rd Quarter for you? What is something you have accomplished since the new year that you are proud of?

I think my biggest improvement was writing. If I asked someone to look at my first blogs and my most recent blogs I think they would agree. What I think helped me the most improve this skill was the blogs. Posting a blog every week helped me learn from my mistakes. Also, reading other student's blogs gave me inspiration and I saw what they did wrong, so I would make sure I didn't do that too.

The most challenging part of the 3rd quarter for me was the blogs. On some weeks blogs would easy to do and other would be hard. The blogs were especially hard when I started a new book. I say they were harder when I started a new book because little stuff happen at the beginning of the books. I also think the blogs were hard because I tried not to do the same prompts.

I'm the most proud of keeping my grades up this quarter. I the most proud this because my grades were low at one point of the quarter. Over four days I made up all of the work I needed to. Now I didn't fail both classes and have A's.

Extended Metaphor Poem 3/12/15

"The Sport not Played"
Parody of "The Road not Taken" by Robert Frost
3/15/15

Basketball and baseball diverged on a playing field,
And sorry I could not play both
And be one athlete, long I kneeled
And looked down one as far as it appealed;
To where the fence bent and stopped its growth;

Then picked the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted dare;
Though as for that the playing there
Had dared them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In game no steps had came back.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how game leads on to game,
I doubted if I would ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere months and months hence:
Two sports diverged on a field, And I -
I took the one less played by,
And that has made all the difference.

Smart, athletic, worried, unique
A character in Mike Lupica's story

Who notices loneliness, friends, and fun times
Who feels happiness, anger, and sorrow
Who learns from friend/family and experiences
Who used to think Ellie was a regular girl but now knows she isn't

A book that has its ups and downs
A book that's about sports and family issues

"Waterfalls" - Picture Poem 3/4/15

“Waterfalls”

As I travel down hill
I crash into many rocks.
I get toss all around
and I go flying like a hawk.

Some say my sounds are beautiful
but other might not agree.
People say I’m dangerous
but I think I’m full of glee.

I’m am really blue
but I have a white glow.
I’m not sure why this occurs
but it makes me look like snow.

Visitors come and go
they come just to see me!
It always different people
even from across the sea.

I can’t explain why humans are fascinated by water
they’re practically made of it!
Although, I do enjoy seeing them
I will have to admit.
